Presented is an antique, English sterling silver vinaigrette or scent box made in Birmingham in 1818. This piece has a very unusual design, a box within a box. The outside top lid and bottom are beautifully engraved. The sides are accented with crisp fluting. The inside grill of the scent box has a beautiful pierced design. The inside of the box and grill are all gold-washed. The hinge to the outside lid and the hinge to the inside grill to the scent box are in great working condition.
The inside of the vinaigrette box is marked with a lion passant mark indicating sterling silver, an anchor for the city of Birmingham, the duty mark of King George III's head, a date mark u for 1818 and the marker's mark L & Co for Lea & Co.
This piece is in very good condition. There are 2 small splits to the silver at the bottom right and left corners next to the lid. Otherwise in excellent condition.
