Fabulous Georgian English Sterling Silver Sixpence Toddy/Punch Ladle
Regular price
$267.00
Presented is a wonderful Georgian English toddy or punch ladle, with a baleen handle. This is an interesting piece, with the bowl of the ladle having been formed from a silver coin, as can be seen by looking at the rim, and also having a silver sixpence coin set in the center. The ladle's handle is made from a piece of whale baleen, and has the appearance of attractive dark wood. The date of the coin set in the center is 1787, and this is likely around the date of the ladle itself as well. This ladle would have been used for serving alcoholic punch, and is entirely useable for any similar purpose today, though it would be equally impressive simply as a display piece. This is a fantastic piece, and would be an asset to any table or collection.
The ladle is in great overall condition. The baleen handle has some damage to one end, which is typical of baleen handles, and the handle has been remounted at some point. The silver is in excellent condition, with no splits, no breaks, no monograms, and no repairs.
The ladle is approximately 13 3/4 inches long.
The ladle weighs 35.4 grams. Much of this weight is silver, given the lightness of the baleen handle.
