Fab set 8 c1840 English Staffordshire Ridgway Japan Flowers Wide Rim Soup Bowls
Regular price
$533.00
Presented is a lovely set of 8 Staffordshire stone china wide rim soup bowls. These bowls date to around the 1830s-1850s and were made by John & William Ridgway. The bowls are made in the 'Japan Flowers' pattern, which as the name suggests features colorful floral designs with gilt detailing. The palette is quite distinctive, done in blue and varying shades of pink and purple. The bowls have a wide, scalloped rim and a generous 'well' in the center, in the form sometimes called a soup plate, though of course it can be used however you like.
This set is in great overall condition particularly for their age. One bowl has three small chips to the underside of the rim, which are not visible from the top side. Another bowl has a very small chip to the foot rim, and a very fine hairline to the rim. One bowl has a tiny chip to the underside of the rim as well as a hairline, more visible on the underside. A couple of the plates have some crazing here and there, but nothing significant and no discoloration. All of the plates ring well when tapped. No breaks and no repairs. Please note we are being very careful in going over these pieces with a fine tooth comb to give the best idea possible of condition, when in reality most of these flaws are very hard to spot and the set in remarkable condition, particularly for its age and material.
These bowls are marked JWR for John & William Ridgway as well as 'stone china' and the name of the pattern, Japan Flowers.
Each bowl measures about 10 inches in diameter and stands about 1 1/2 inches tall at the rim. -jm
