Fab mid 1800s Hand Painted European Snuffbox Picnic Scene
Presented is a fabulous mid 1800s painted silver snuffbox. This box is certainly of European make, likely French or German. The box is beautifully hand painted with intricate scenes on every side. The lid shows an 18th century genre scene, depicting a man and two women having a picnic. The rest of the sides show various landscapes. This piece is not stamped or hallmarked, but we have tested it with nitric acid and guarantee it to be silver. The snuff box is in good overall condition, particularly considering the age and material. The silver is in great shape, with no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs. There was likely a hinge at once point in time, but there no longer is, although the lid still shuts nicely. The scene on the lid has some cracklature, and the paint has some minor losses here and there throughout, so please view the photos carefully and let them be your guide. The scene on the underside is in the best condition out of all the sides. The box measures about 3 ¼ by 1 5/8 by 7/8 of an inch, LxWxH. The box weighs 49 grams or 1.7 regular ounces.
