Exceptional Late 1800s Chinese Export Silver Regency Style Candlestick
Regular price
$1,495.00
Presented is an excellent Chinese export silver table candlestick, dating to the late 1800s. The style of the candlestick looks earlier, however, as it's a very faithful execution of a classical Regency continental look, certainly one of the better Chinese export silver candlesticks we have seen. The candlestick has a round column form, with bold acanthus leaf and palmette decoration around the socle and above the base. The rim of the bobeche has a beaded border, while the rim of the foot is ornately decorated with alternating acanthus leaves and flowers in lobed border. The quality of all the decoration is exceptional, richly detailed and with hand engraved texturing. This is a weighted candlestick, but the underside of the base is inset with wood, allowing us to see that the silver that makes up the candlestick is of a good thickness.
This piece is in excellent overall condition. There are a few tiny dings to the shaft here and there, but nothing significant. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The underside of the bobeche is hallmarked/stamped with two Chinese character marks. This piece is nitric acid tested and guaranteed at least 900 purity silver.
This candlestick stands about 11 inches tall and measures about 4 1/2 inches in diameter at the base.
This candlestick weighs 655 grams or 23.1 regular ounces. Due to the interior weighting, not all of this weight is silver. -jm
