Exceptional 1878 Russian 875 Silver Hand Engraved Twist Handle Caviar Spoon
Regular price
$195.00
Presented is a wonderful quality antique Russian silver spoon. This spoon dates to 1878. The spoon is made in a classical form with a wide rounded fig-shaped bowl, twist handle, and decorative onion dome finial to the end of the handle. The back of the bowl is fabulously hand engraved with two eagles, various flowers and foliage, and a very ornately shaped cartouche, all against a finely textured background. The engraving is quite deep and crisp, very skillfully executed. The cartouche has never been monogrammed. The spoon has a faint gold wash. The weight is good for the size, and the piece has a nice feeling of quality in the hand.
This piece is in great condition. The engraving is exceptionally crisp. The gold wash is faint, but in an appealing way that speaks to the age of the piece. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The stem is stamped with a full set of Russian hallmarks: a maker's mark possibly for Nicholai Guriyasnov, an assay master's stamp dated 1878, the 84 zolotnik mark for 875 purity silver, and the city mark for Moscow.
This spoon measures about 7 3/8 inches long.
The spoon weighs 66 grams, or 2.3 regular ounces. -jm
