ENGLISH GEORGE II SIXPENCE STERLING SILVER COIN TODDY LADLE
Regular price
$302.00
Presented is an 18th century, English coin silver and baleen toddy ladle. The bowl of the ladle was hand wrought out of a silver coin and the center is set with a George II sixpence from 1731. This ladle was made between 1731 to approximately 1760. The silver bowl is beautifully hand chased with glossy scroll and leaf decorations over a finely stippled or pebbled background. The baleen handle is in a classical twist form, it is securely riveted to the silver handle and also has a silver tip.
There no hallmarks because this piece was fashioned from a silver coin. You can actually see the original edge design of the coin on the edge of the bowl.
This old piece is in great overall condition for its age. There has been a solder repair to the back of the bowl at the junction of the handle. The inside of the bowl was reinforced with a sheet of sterling at the same location. There are some small holes on the baleen handle as you can see in the photos. Natural parasites ate into the baleen handle, this has always been a common occurrence with baleen. The parasites died after the baleen was harvested, at least 280 years ago. The baleen handle is still strong and functional. There are no other damages or repairs.
The ladle measures 12 3/8 inches long.
