Presented is a magnificent, early American coin silver tablespoon or serving spoon. This spoon was made by Eben Whitney of New York, NY who was working c1805-1828. This spoon is a long serving spoon in a traditional pattern with a coffin style end and oval pointed bowl. The handle is monogrammed with MAR in flowing period script. This spoon would be a fantastic addition to the collection of anyone who values early American silver.
This spoon is hallmarked on the back of the stem with the maker's mark of E.Whitney which was one of the marks used by Eben Whitney between the years of 1805 and 1828. The coffin end design and the lack of shoulders near the bowl would indicate a date between 1805 to 1815 at the latest.
This spoon is not hallmarked for purity but that is not at all uncommon in pieces of this period. We have tested this spoon and guarantee it to be coin silver.
This spoon is in good used condition, especially considering its age. There are no cracks, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
This spoon is 9 5/8 inches long.
This spoon weighs 51.8 grams or 1.8 ounces.
