Presented is a wonderful pair of antique English sterling silver tongs. These are made in a traditional form. There is a monogram at the central pivot point of the tongs/scissors, please view the photos as they are an important part of the description. Originally these were for sugar cubes or even sweet meats.

The condition is very good, especially for the age. I can find no breaks or repairs.

Both of the finger holds are hallmarked with the lion passant and the maker's mark. All four of the hallmarks have significant wear, although enough of one of the lion hallmarks is visible to see the notch in the side of the hallmark. This style of punch was only used in London between 1739 to 1755. Most likely the tongs were made in the 1740s. Not enough of the maker's mark is visible, but the last letter is certainly G.

The length is 4 5/8 inches.

The weight is 38.4 grams or 1.35 ounces.
