Presented is an impressive antique Frank Whiting sterling silver centerpiece bowl, dating to circa 1895-1910. The bowl is made in a lovely classical form, with two C-scroll handles and a low round pedestal foot. The wide rim of the bowl is beautifully decorated with flowing, scrolled ribbon type designs, interspersed with floral elements in almost an iris or fleur de lis type of form, very much in the Art Nouveau style of the time to which the piece dates. The round foot is decorated around the edge in the same way. The bowl has a stamped capacity of 3 1/2 pints, or 56 fluid ounces/1.7 liters.
This piece is in great overall condition. There is a very small dent to the edge just inside the rim near one handle, and a couple of very small dings on the rim near the opposite handle, with another tiny ding a couple of inches further around the rim. All of which you can see in the third photograph, though the dent visible on the righthand side in that photograph is much less noticeable in person. Anything else that looks dark or like a damage is just a reflection. There are no splits, no other dents, no breaks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The underside is stamped with the maker's mark for Frank Whiting, as well as sterling, the number 3048, and the capacity, 3 1/2 pints.
The bowl stands about 6 3/4 inches tall at the tallest point and measures about 14 5/8 inches across the handles.
The bowl weighs 1252 grams or 44.1 regular ounces. -jm
