Presented is a lovely set of 9 saucers or small bowls by Spode Copeland. These pieces date to the first quarter of the 1900s and were retailed by Davis Collamore & Co on 5th Avenue. We aren't sure if these are high sided saucers or small bowls; the sides are high enough to use as shallow bowls, and there is not an indentation for a cup, as you see on some saucers. The center of each dish has a beautifully hand painted genre scene of a man or woman against a backdrop of picturesque countryside, a farmhouse somewhere in the background. The women have baskets or bundles on their back where they've been gathering crops or firewood, while the men have hunting or farming implements.
The quality of the painting on these scenes is exceptional, they are very detailed and appealing. Around the sides are colorful butterflies. The rims of the dishes are gilded with a scalloped design.
These pieces are in great condition. There are no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs.
Each dish is signed with the Spode Copeland's China maker's mark in green, as well as Spode, 3515, and AD1823 in red. There is also a retail mark for Davis Collamore & Co Ltd of New York. There is a signature in red, H.C. Lea.
Each dish is about 5 3/4 inches in diameter and about 1 inch high at the sides. Weight: 2 lbs 11 oz (1218.3 grams) -jm
