Presented is a tall, heavy brilliant cut glass and sterling silver ewer or water pitcher produced by Redlich & Company of New York city near the end of the 19th century, about 1896. The detailing in the silver decorated with acorns, flowers, foliage and scrolls is exquisitely done, and the silver is generously applied! The thick glass is cut in vertical prisms edged in zippers and ovals, and the handle is cut in boldly scaled rounds and cross-checks. There's a fabulous hobstar in the base with 24 rays.
The sterling silver top is hallmarked with the Redlich & Co. maker's mark, "Sterling", "Pat 96" and the number 146. The glass bears no signatures that we can find, but given the high level of craftsmanship required to produce this piece, the cut glass is assumed to be the work of Dorflinger or Mauser or Hawkes, the master glass cutters of the period.
This extraordinary antique is in very good condition. There are some light marks on the silver, and two tiny chips, and two or three spec-sized rough spots on the glass and that is all we can find. There are no heat marks or cracks in the handle, and no other damages or repairs. A spectacular example of American brilliant cut glass, a highly decorative piece of luminous cut glass and silver repousse art, and a beautiful, functional serving vessel for you and your guests in your home.
Dimensions: 11 3/4 inches tall with a base of about 6 inches in diameter and 4 3/8 inches diameter at the mouth.
Capacity: At least 88 oz. (2.75 quarts or 11 cups)
Weight: 6 lbs 12 oz. tm
