Presented is a fine old Russian gilt silver handled cake or ice cream slice, dating to circa 1855. This mid 19th century piece is done in a classic knot pattern and the handle has a deep gold wash. The blade of the server is stainless steel and has a slightly serrated edge. One side of the handle has a hand engraved crest of a crowned fleur-de-lis. This server is in great overall condition, particularly considering its age. The gold wash of the handle has some noticeable wear, mostly to the lower half of the handle and the high points of the pattern, but the majority of the gold wash is still intact.

The blade is likely a replacement, as it is marked Sheffield stainless blade made in England. But the replacement was done very well and the piece is quite useable. No monogram removals and no solder repairs.

The handle of the server is stamped on one side with “Malcz,” the maker's mark for Karol Filip Malcz, one of the most well known Warsaw silversmiths. We got this server in a group lot with other pieces by the same maker in the same pattern, which had full sets of Russian hallmarks, including assay dates ranging from 1855-1861 and the Kokoshnik mark for 84/96 (875/1000) purity silver. The handle of this server is 875 purity silver, nitric acid tested and guaranteed. It no doubt dates to around the same time period as well.

The server measures about 11 inches long.

This piece weighs 124 grams.

Please note due to the stainless steel blade, not all of this weight is silver. -jm
