c1850s Gorgeous American Coin Silver 4 Piece Tea Set Fargo Family Monogram
Regular price
$5,537.00
Presented is a fabulous 1850s American coin silver large 4-piece tea set. The set consists of a teapot, sugar bowl, creamer, and waste bowl. This set displays ornate hand chased flowers with birds and scrolls. All four pieces have cast and applied handles and feet which displays vines and scrolls. The quality is superb, in every way. The creamer, sugar bowl, and teapot have matching oak leaves with an acorn. The waste bowl has a bright interior gold wash.
On one side of each piece in the set, there is a large cartouche that has been monogrammed “Fargo”. There is no doubt in our mind that the set was owned by the family of William Fargo, co-founder of the freight company that became today's American Express as well as the financial institution Wells Fargo, likewise still a household name. This remarkable set came to us in a lot with several other pieces owned by this historic family, including a christening cup engraved with a presentation to Edwin M. Fargo and the date 1861. Edwin Morgan Fargo, born 1861, was one of William Fargo's eight children, though unfortunately he would die quite young, in 1865. So although the rest of the silver items in the lot are only engraved with the surname, we are quite confident of their provenance with the historic Fargo family. You can view the listings for these items, which are all extraordinary pieces of silver in their own right as would be expected from the attachment to such a prominent name, by searching “Fargo” in our store.
There are no hallmarks, which is not unusual for American coin silver. The set has been tested and is guaranteed to be coin silver.
The tea set is in excellent overall condition. The chased decoration are crisp and well-defined. There are no breaks, no splits, no dents, no repairs, and no problems of any kind.
