c1850s American Coin Silver Folding Pocket Pen or Fruit Knife Olive Leaf Design
Regular price
$135.00
Presented is an antique American coin silver pocket knife dating to around the 1840s-1860s. The handle and blade are both coin silver, and the knife is quite well made. The handle has an attractive threaded edge and foliate design, almost like the Olive pattern flatware that was popular at the time, and the center of each side has an oval cartouche, never monogrammed. The blade has an engraved monogram of S. K. Thompson. The blade has a maker's mark of an arm & hammer, F, and anchor, which is unidentified but pictured in John McGrew's 'Manufacturers' Marks on American Coin Silver' and attributed as possibly Albert Coles or a custom-mark for an unidentified retailer. Certainly there are plenty of folding pen/fruit knives by Albert Coles with a very similar look out there.
This piece is in good, working condition. The sides of the handle have some surface wear, dings, commensurate with age and use, but no major damages and no repairs. The raised designs are fairly crisp and the case/handle itself has never been monogrammed. The blade is secure in the case and closes up tight.
Length when closed: 3 inches. Length when open: 5 1/8 inches.
Weight: 32.6 grams. -jm
