Antique Wendt Medallion 1864 Sterling Silver Serving Spoon/Scoop 8 5/8"
Presented is a fine old sterling silver serving spoon or scoop by John Wendt or possibly Gorham. This piece is done in the Medallion pattern, which began production in 1864. As the name suggests, this pattern features a medallion design for the end of the handle, with a classical Greco-Roman style profile in the center of the medallion. This particular piece has a helmeted soldier's profile, very well done down to the detail of the plume on his helmet. The bowl of the scoop has a ribbed/scalloped design. The back of the handle has a monogram of HFH.
The server is in great condition. The details of the pattern are nice and crisp. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
This piece is stamped on the stem with the retailer's mark for Starr & Marcus as well as 925 for sterling silver. Wendt often stamped his flatware with just the 925 mark. This pattern is known to have been made by John Wendt.
This piece is about 8 5/8 inches long.
This piece weighs 77 grams or 2.7 regular ounces.
