Presented is a very pretty locking tea caddy box with a gorgeous hand-painted scene on the top. The romantically portrayed pastoral scene depicts a family resting by a large rock with two Chamois antelopes behind them. The Interlaken Monastery sits in the background among the trees beneath the majestic Bernese Alps. This piece was made during the mid 19th century. Inside, the space is divided into six very clean square compartments to hold your tea or other treasured possessions. The front edge of the box bears the hand-scripted name of the scene, which in English translates roughly to "the Jungfrau*, from Unterseen". Some of the letters are worn and no longer legible, as we show in the photos.

The condition of the box is fair to good. The painting is beautiful, with only trivial scratches and wear. There is a significant but tight crack on the top right corner and also on the bottom in the same location. The top bows slightly on the right-front corner but the hinges are fine and the box closes reasonably well.

Dimensions: 11 5/8 wide by 9 1/8 inches deep by 2 inches tall tm

* Jungfrau mountain is 13,642 ft high and the third highest mountain in the Bernese Alps. Unterseen is a historic town in Bern, Switzerland.
