Antique c1850 John Polhemus Louis XIV NYC Coin Silver Punch Soup Ladle
Regular price
$576.00
Presented is a nice antique coin silver or sterling silver soup ladle or punch ladle done in the Louis XIV pattern by the New York silversmith, John Polhemus. This pattern is very similar to the Olive and Tuscany patterns. The end of the handle is engraved with C. E. VanPelt in an elegant script.
The ladle is marked on the reverse with Patent 1847, Sterling, and the retailer’s stamp of Robert Rait. Rait was a New York City retailer who was in business between 1830 to 1855. We believe that the Sterling mark was perhaps added many years after this ladle was made. When this ladle was made, between 1847 through the 1850s, very few pieces were being stamped sterling. We have tested this ladle and guarantee it to be at least 900 purity silver.
The ladle is in great condition overall. It has some surface wear and some small dings, particularly on the bowl, but there are no dents, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs.
The ladle is 12 3/8 inches long.
The weight is 210 grams or 7.4 ounces.
