Presented is a wonderful quality, heavy weight swing handle basket made by Theodore B. Starr. This basket was made in the late 1800s to the very early 1900s. The basket is raised up on four ball feet and has an elegant open work design of a cupid drawing back a bow and shooting an arrow. This motif is repeated around the entire raised edge of the bowl and in the center. Between each of these medallions are grape leaves, clusters of grapes and curly cues, presumably vines. All of this work has been individually cast and applied. All of the castings are well done and quite heavy. The swing handle is also adorned with a cluster of grapes and leaves.

The basket is marked on the inside of the handle with the maker’s mark for Theodore B. Starr, New York, Sterling and a product number. Everything on this entire piece is sterling silver.

The condition is excellent. The swing handle is working flawlessly. The flat, geometric pierced work on the bottom has a couple of very insignificant dents. Otherwise there are no other dents, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs.

The basket measures 7 3/4 inches by 9 1/4 inches and has a maximum height of 6 1/4 inches.

The weight is 440.1 grams or 15.4 ounces.
