Presented is an interesting sterling silver covered dish. The dish has English style hallmarks that seem to indicate that it was made in London in 1711 from first standard/958 purity silver, however the marks and the form don't seem to match that time frame. We believe this is a late 1800s/early 1900s piece. Whatever the case, the dish is well made by hand from thick, heavy gauge silver. The dish has two urn style handles and stands on four bun or flattened ball form feet. The lid has a dark wooden finial. The bowl is engraved with a crest of an eagle displayed, above a banner with the Latin motto Honorate, Diligite, Timete (Trans. 'Honour, Love, Fear.'). This crest and motto are associated with the Moseley name.

This piece is in great condition. There are no splits, no breaks,no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs.

This piece is stamped on the underside as well as on the lid with these English hallmarks: the Britannia mark indicating first standard/958 purity silver, the lion's head erased for the city of London, the date letter for 1711, and a maker's mark of CH. However, we believe these marks are likely spurious, as they are not cleanly stamped and the form of the piece does not seem appropriate for the time period the marks indicate.

We have tested this piece with nitric acid and guarantee it to be at least sterling/925 purity silver, and it is certainly antique.

The piece measures 11 3/4 inches from handle to handle, is 9 inches in diameter and is 6 1/2 inches tall.

This piece weighs 964 grams or 34.0 regular ounces.
