Presented is a nice Dutch silver swing handle basket. The basket has a beautiful 18th century form with hand piercing and elegant engraving. Most of the hallmarks suggest that the basket was made significantly later than this time period. There is a rooster mark that may indicate an early nineteenth century date. It is possible that the basket was made in the early 1800s and remarked with the 20th century hallmarks years after its manufacture. Please look at the photos and decide for yourself. This charming basket has never been monogrammed or engraved.

The basket is hallmarked on the underside with the lion mark for Dutch 833 purity silver, the key export mark, and a maker’s mark. One of the letters of the maker’s mark is N. The other letter is too worn to read. The basket is stamped on the base with the date letter “Z” for 1904 and on the handle with the Minerva’s head duty mark. The basket is also marked with a rooster mark that resembles the Dutch purity mark used from 1810 to 1814.

The condition is excellent. There are no dents, no splits, no monograms, no monogram removals, no breaks, and no repairs.

The basket is 4 inches wide, 5 inches long, and has a maximum height of 4 1/4 inches.

The weight is 107 grams or 3.7 ounces.
