Presented is a decorative, German silver and cut glass basket made by Wolf & Knell of Hanau, Germany during the last quarter of the 1800s. The basket is raised on four embellished feet and the decorative handle stands upright on its own, with a tight hinge on either side. The body of the basket is done in an openwork, 19th century Dutch style with classical courting scenes surrounded by flourishing scrolls and flowers. The original, thick glass insert has a ruffled rim that is cut with nice little star shapes. The whole piece is very ornate and pretty.
The underside is marked with Wolf & Knell’s pseudo-hallmarks. This piece is guaranteed to be at least .800 purity silver.
This piece is in excellent overall condition. There was a chip to the rim of the glass insert that has been smoothed out and re-cut a star to match the rest of the pattern; this imperfection is only really noticeable upon close inspection of the piece. There are no dents, no breaks, no splits, no cracks and no other repairs.
The basket measures 3 3/4 by 5 1/4 inches and is 6 7/8 inches tall with the handle raised upright. The silver basket, without the glass insert weighs 165 grams or 5.8 ounces.
