Presented is a fine antique English sterling silver tea or coffee pot almost certainly made by Peter and William Bateman. The pot is raised up on four ball feet and has a handsome wooden handle and finial. The pot has a gadrooned design around the rim with a Greek key motif engraved below. The shoulder is engraved with a repeating design of flowers with a band of leaves below. The front of the piece is engraved with a great crest of an eagle or another similar bird.
The pot is hallmarked below the rim with the lion passant for sterling silver, the date letter ‘s’ for 1813, and a maker’s mark. Only the letters WB are visible, but clearly there were other letters about this. The only English maker that this pot could be his Peter and William Bateman. These hallmarks are on the lid. The hallmarks on the side of the pot are too worn to make out, except for the leopards head crown for London.
This pot has numerous repairs. The front of the pot has three repairs around the widest part of the body. There are also a couple of repairs where the legs attach and on the edges of the spout as shown in the photographs. In addition, the wood handle has a small chip to the top corner on the front side of the pot. Obviously something less than perfect condition. The handle is tight to the body.
The pot measures 10 1/2 inches wide from handle to spout and 6 3/4 inches tall.
