Presented is a fine quality 18th-century silver bowl. The bowl has a wavy edge rim with a thick applied gadrooned border. The silver has a nice hand hammered finish throughout. The bowl was made between 1750 and 1800, probably in the 1760s of 1770s.

The bowl is stamped on the underside as we have shown in the last photograph. This is almost certainly a maker's mark, but we certainly cannot determine the maker. This piece could be American colonial silver, it seems about as likely as anywhere. The lack of official government hallmarks and the slightly primitive nature of the bowl certainly lead my mind to the belief that this is an American piece. The double struck hallmark is also something seen on American colonial silver. Spanish colonial is also another possibility, although that seems a little bit less likely.

We have been told by a kind eBayer that the mark is likely a PG for Phillip Garrett or Philip Goelet. The eBayer believes it is more likely the former, because Garrett used a rectangular surround closely crowded to the letters, and Goelet used an ovoid-like shape surround at more distance from the letters. If so, this would make this an American piece.

The bowl is in good condition overall. Strips of silver were added in a couple of places to reinforce the rim, which makes a nice quality, if obvious repair. There is a small hole near one of these repairs, but this is only noticeable upon close inspection. There are also a couple little solder repairs to the underside of the rim, and one tiny split, approximately 1/8 of an inch. Apart from these small flaws which are not very noticeable, the bowl is in great condition. There are no dents, no monograms, no monogram removals, no other repairs, and no breaks.

The bowl measures 12 3/4 inches in diameter and 1 3/4 inches tall.

The weight is 765 grams or 26.8 ounces.
