Presented is a rare Queen Anne period sterling silver tankard made by Humphrey Payne. This large, heavy weight tankard is masterfully wrought in Britannia standard 958 purity silver, a higher silver purity than even sterling silver. It has handsome gadrooned decoration on both the base and the lid and an elegant fluted thumbpiece with scrolls on the edges. There is a monogram on the handle of the letter W over the letters I and M in block script. This is the original monogram. The entire piece is exceptionally well made and has superb weight.

The tankard is fully hallmarked on the inside of the lid and below the rim with the seated Hibernia for 958 purity silver, the lion’s head erased for London, the date letter for 1712, and a maker’s mark of PA for Humphrey Payne. The handle is also stamped with a maker’s mark for Humphrey Payne. It appears that the tankard originally had a crest on the lid which has since been removed.

Otherwise, the condition is excellent. There never was a monogram to the body of the tankard. There are no major dents, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs.

The tankard measures 5 7/8 inches in diameter at the base, 6 1/8 inches tall to the rim, and 7 3/4 inches tall to the top of the thumbpiece.

The weight is 880.2 grams or 30.8 ounces.
