Presented is a superb German silver beaker or cup. This piece was made by Christian Metze and dates to 1662-1691. The cup is beautifully hand chased with a floral design in high relief. There are two oval panels, with depictions of two Roman emperors in profile, Flavius Honorius and Aulus Vitellius. The depictions are detailed and well done, very dignified and august. The cup is very well made, and for it to be intact and in such great shape makes it a superb opportunity for any collector.

This piece is in great overall condition. There are a couple of minor dents here and there, but nothing excessive. The piece is in remarkable shape for its age. There are no splits, no leaks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.

The cup is stamped on the underside with the city mark for Ohlau in Schlesien and the maker's mark for Christian Metze, 1662-1691. Examples of these marks can be found on page 268 of Marc Rosenberg's Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen, Vol. III. There are no silver purity hallmarks, but the cup is nitric acid tested and guaranteed 800-900 purity silver.

The cup is about 4 7/8 inches tall.

The cup weighs 121 grams or 4.3 regular ounces.
