Presented is a fantastic Victorian 10 karat gold and carved carnelian fob. This
is an American piece, dating to circa 1870-1880. The fob is set with a rounded
square piece of intaglio carved carnelian, in a rich deep orange that is
beautifully translucent when held to the light. The carving depicts a helmeted
Greco-Roman figure in profile, perhaps Ares/Mars. The gold setting is sleek and handsome, with a
rope turned design around the edge.
The fob is in great condition. The details of the designs are nice and crisp.
There are no breaks and no repairs.
This piece is not stamped. We have tested it with nitric acid and guarantee
it to be 10 karat gold.
The fob measures about 1 1/4 inches from the loop at the top to the bottom,
and about 7/8 inches from side to side.
The fob weighs 7.0 grams.
