Presented is a beautiful English sterling silver 5 piece grooming set, part of a larger dressing set of which we have many pieces for sale. The sterling silver handles and backs of these pieces are by Finnigans Ltd and date to 1926. The silver portions feature very ornate decoration in the form of machine turned radiant designs, fruit, leaf, and flower borders, and ropetwist edging. The silver has a rich gold wash, which gives the pieces a very high end, luxurious look that would be a grand addition to any vanity or dressing room's décor.
The set consists of:
Hairbrush: 9 3/4 inches long.
Mirror: 12 inches long. 2
Clothesbrushes: 7 1/2 inches long, 7 3/8 inches long.
Shoehorn: 9 7/8 inches long.
This set is in excellent overall condition. The details of the decoration are sharp and crisp throughout. The gold wash is in great shape, with only the most minor of wear. The glass of the mirror has some discoloration, but could easily be replaced. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
Each piece is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head for the city of London, the date letter l for 1926, and the maker's mark for Finnigans Ltd underneath, with the maker's mark and address for Finnigans spelled out on one of the clothes brushes, the hairbrush, and the mirror. The blade of the shoehorn is marked steel.
We received the entire dresser set as part of a lot from the same estate, and all the pieces match and are no doubt by the same maker.
The total weight for the set, with the brush inserts, is 1097 grams or 38.7 regular ounces.
The weight of just the silver backs for the hair brush and the two clothesbrushes is 344.7 grams or 12.2 regular ounces, but considering the mirror and the handle of the shoehorn, even more of the total weight for the set is sterling silver.
