4 Antique English Victorian 1837 Gilt Gold Wash Sterling Silver Candlesticks
Presented is a wonderfully crafted set of 4 English sterling silver candlesticks made in 1837 by TJ & N Creswick. Each candlestick is completely covered in a fine gold wash. The candlesticks are ornately designed with flourishes, flowers and shell accents. The bases are engraved with a fabulous and surprisingly crisp crest of a griffin head above a crown. Visible on only one of the candlestick bases is an additional crest on the opposite side of the same griffin and crown over a faded monogram. The bobeches or wax drips are removable for easy cleaning. The bases are weighted but the pure silver weight is substantial.
Each candlestick is marked with the crown for Sheffield, a duty mark of Queen Victoria’s head, a date letter r for the year 1837 and a maker’s mark for T.J & N Creswick.
This set is in very good condition for its age. One of the shell feet along the base of one candlestick has been pushed up slightly. There are only a few dents and some slight surface wear. There are no other damages.
Each candlestick measures 9 3/8 inches tall and each base measures 5 1/4 inches in diameter.
