3pc Rare Heavy Venetian Italian 950 Silver Tea Set 1815
Regular price
$2,705.00
Presented is a wonderful quality 3 piece Venetian silver tea set made between 1810 and 1820. The set is magnificently wrought in 950 purity silver, a higher silver purity than sterling silver. The set has tremendous weight, I typically do not think of Italian silver as being this heavy. The teapot has old insulators on the handle and a removable cover topped with an elegant carved finial. The finial looks more recent but I believe it to be original, it has probably just been cleaned. The sugar bowl has a nice gold wash on the interior. Each piece is engraved on the side with a neat crest of arrows with a crown below. There is a T monogram in Gothic script beneath the crest. It is quite difficult to find a tea set from this period that was made in Italy. This is a rare piece of superb Venetian silver craftsmanship. Tremendous weight, a great design and beautiful execution.
The set includes:
Teapot: 7 5/8 inches wide from handle to spout and 4 3/4 inches tall
Creamer: 3 1/2 inches wide from handle to spout and 2 1/2 inches tall
Sugar bowl: 4 7/8 inches wide from handle to handle and 2 1/2 inches tall
Each piece is hallmarked on the underside with the ship mark for Venetian 950 purity silver. This mark was used between 1810 and 1815, although there is probably a five-year leeway on either side of those dates. This set was definitely made in the first quarter of the 1800s. The set is also stamped with what appears to be a maker’s mark of AG with an anchor in the middle. There is a third hallmark that we have not been able to identify.
The condition is excellent. There has been a minor repair to the handle of the teapot, but this is very difficult to notice. The handle is very tight to the body. All three pieces are clean on the interior and ready to use. There are no dents, no dings, no splits, and no breaks. About as clean as any tea set that I have ever seen, especially one that is 200 years old.
The total weight is 994 grams or 34.8 ounces.
