2pc 1791 English Georgian Sterling Silver Platter Stuffing Spoons Ostrich Crest
Regular price
$506.00
Presented is a wonderful pair of antique English Georgian sterling silver stuffing, platter, or serving spoons, dated 1791 and made by Charles Hougham. These spoons are made in a classic Georgian style, with downward curved handles and a pip to the back of the terminal. Both spoons have a finely engraved crest of an ostrich holding a horseshoe, fittingly enough for the Ostrich family name, though also associated with the Digby and Coke names, particularly the line of Sir Kenelm Digby and Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester. Both spoons also have a monogram on the reverse of the terminal, one the initials GAC and the other CPR.
This pair of spoons is in excellent condition. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
Each piece is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head crowned for the city of London, the date letter q for 1791, the duty stamp of King George III's head, and the maker's mark for Charles Hougham.
Each spoon measures about 12 inches long. The total weight for the pair is 177 grams or 6.2 regular ounces. -jm
