Presented is a pretty antique, English sterling silver vinaigrette or scent box made in Birmingham in 1861. The inside of the box has a gold wash.
The inside of the vinaigrette box is marked with an anchor for the city of Birmingham, a date mark M for 1861, the duty mark of Queen Victoria's head, a lion passant mark indicating sterling silver and the marker's mark ES for Edward Smith.
This piece is in excellent condition. The outside top lid has a blank cartouche encased in scrollwork. The top and bottom have a detailed linear design and the sides are accented with a crisp scroll detail. The inside grill of the scent box has a beautiful pierced design. The inside of the box and grill are all gold-washed. The hinge to the outside lid and the inside grill to the scent box are in great working condition. There is one dent on the upper right corner of the lid, please see photos.
