Presented is a superb English Georgian sterling silver swing handle basket. This piece dates to 1825 and was made by Robert Gainsford. The basket has an ornately decorated rim with openwork designs of roses, grape clusters and leaves, classical scroll and shell designs, and open latticework. All the decoration is very detailed and well done, with hand chased texturing and detailing. There are five scroll-enclosed cartouches around the rim, none of which have ever been monogrammed or inscribed. The handle of the basket is also finely decorated with detailed foliate designs and a blank cartouche at the highest point. Even the foot is decorated with hand chased designs.

This piece is in excellent overall condition. The details of the decoration are nice and crisp. There is a tiny ding to one cartouche, where the handle of the basket touches it. There are no splits, no breaks, no dents, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.

This piece is hallmarked on side of the base with the lion passant for sterling silver, the crown for the city of Sheffield, the date letter b for 1825, the duty mark of King George III's head, and the maker's mark for Robert Gainsford. The handle is also hallmarked with the lion passant, the maker's mark RG, King George III's duty mark, and the date letter b, but these marks are less clear.

The basket measures about 10 1/4 inches in diameter and about 3 3/4 inches tall at the rim. The height to the handle is about 8 3/4 inches, although the handle does not stand up on its own.

This piece weighs 656 grams or 23.1 regular ounces. -jm
