Presented is an impressive English Georgian sterling silver teapot or coffee pot. This piece is dated 1799 and was made by Peter, Ann, & William Bateman. The pot is fabulously hand engraved around the upper sides of the body with an intricate design of floral garlands, swags, and foliate scrollwork. The design encompasses an oval cartouche on both sides, neither of which has a monogram. The lid, foot, and spout likewise feature hand engraved detailing. One side of the pot has a little floral design hanging from the bottom of one of the garlands, which is very likely covering a monogram removal. The finial is done in the form of some kind of fruit emerging from a starburst like cluster of leaves. The interior of the piece is clean as a whistle, ready for use.
This piece is in great overall condition. There are a couple of very slight dents, but they can be professionally removed. The hanging floral design may be over an old monogram removal, and the opposite side has likely had a monogram removal as well. There are no splits, no leaks, and no repairs.
This piece is hallmarked on the underside with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head crowned for the city of London, the date letter D for 1799, King George III's head duty mark, and the maker's mark for Peter, Ann, & William Bateman. The inside of the lid is also stamped with the lion passant for sterling silver and the maker's mark for Peter, Ann & William Bateman. Even the handle is stamped near where it joins the body, with the lion passant, the date letter D, King George III's head, and the maker's mark, all pieces of this pot are 100% original.
This piece stands 11 3/4 inches tall.
The pot has a capacity of 8 cups (64 fluid ounces/1.89 liters)
This piece weighs 1123 grams or 39.6 regular ounces. -jm
