1753 20k Gold English Pair Case Fusee Pocket Watch By Daniel Vauguion
Regular price
$8,640.00
Presented is a fantastic English 20 karat gold pair case watch with fusee
movement. This piece dates to 1753 and was made by Daniel Vauguion. The case is
fabulously chased with a classical Greco-Roman scene, amidst ornate Rococo
scroll and flower designs. The watch has a fine old chain-drive fusee movement,
which is running, though it is running slow. We are selling it as is. A jeweler
or watch repairman could probably adjust the speed until the watch runs
precisely on time. This piece is 20 karat gold, NOT gilt silver, please be
advised.
The watch and case are in great overall condition. The case snaps shut
securely and the hinge is in good shape. The details of the chased designs are
nice and crisp. There are no breaks and no repairs.
Both the case and the watch are signed Daniel Vauguion, a renowned clock and
watch maker of London. The interior of the watch's back is hallmarked with the
lion passant and leopard's head for London, as well as a maker's mark for Daniel
Vauguion and a date letter s for 1753. We have tested both the inner case and
the outer case using nitric acid and a 20 karat gold test stick, the inner and
outer case both tested as strong as or better than the known 20kt gold tester
stick, so we guarantee both cases to be at least 20 karat purity gold.
The watch measures about 2 1/2 inches from the bottom to the top, including
the loop at the top as well as the exterior case.
The total weight for the piece is 105.7 grams. Obviously considering the
watch mechanism, glass etc not all of this weight is gold. The gold outer case
alone weighs 33.7 grams, so even more than this amount of the total weight is
gold.
