Presented is a lovely pair of English sterling silver dishes produced in London in the 18th century, specifically, in 1743 by silversmith Thomas England. Each dish is done in a beautifully symmetrical form of a scallop shell raised on two shell form feet. The plates are of very high quality and are of nice weight and solid feel. Each one bears a crest on its lower right corner, of a highly detailed crown and two letters in flowing script which appear to be "SC".
Each dish is marked on its underside with the leopard’s head for London and the lion passant for sterling silver, the date letter for the year 1743, and the 1743-1746 maker’s mark for Thomas England (registered in 1739).
This pair is in excellent overall condition. One dish has a short, straight, 3.5 mm split in the center front.
Each dish measures 5 3/8 wide by 4 7/8 inches long and is about 5/8 of an inch tall.
Weight: 8.3 oz (236.5 grams) tm
