Presented is a wonderful old English sterling silver strainer. The strainer was more likely used for punch than for tea or wine. The strainer’s handles are done in a very interesting design. I have owned and sold several English chamber sticks from the first half of the 1700s which had this exact design for their handles. Apparently this was a design used for different handles in the first half of the 1700s in England. The bowl is beautifully hand cut out with an ornate design of flowers, scrolls, and leaves. I can find no breaks to any of the cutout work.

The strainer is hallmarked on the underside with the lion passant for sterling silver, the date letter “N” for 1728, and a maker’s mark. The maker’s mark is very worn. The second letter of the maker’s mark is a B, and the shape of the punch indicates that there was another letter or design above the B. The most likely possibilities for the maker seem to be Abraham Buteux or John Bache. Both of these makers were producing in 1728.

The strainer is in great overall condition. There may be a solder repair on one of the handles, but it seems to appear on both handles, so this could be, and probably is, the original construction. The solder is not very noticeable except on the underside. There are no dents, no splits, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no breaks.

The strainer is 10 3/8 inches long.

The weight is 119.4 grams or 4.2 ounces.
