Presented is a fantastic set of 12 English sterling silver Hanoverian rattail spoons from the late 1700s. The set is from a few different makers and years, but all the pieces match perfectly and have the same engraved crest on the front of the handle, a demi wolf rampant holding a lozenge or fusil. The spoons have rounded handles with an upward turn to the tip and a pronounced rattail design to the backs of the bowls.
All the spoons are sterling silver, tested and guaranteed. Some of the spoons have marks that are partially or almost entirely rubbed, but all have traces of hallmarks and most have two or three legible still. Four of the spoons have the same maker W.T., likely for William Turton or Walter Tweedie, and of those four two have S date letters for 1793. Four of the spoons have the same maker TT, likely Thomas Tookey with a date letter d for 1779. Another spoon may also have the TT/JJ maker, but that stamp is nearly illegible. One spoon has mostly illegible marks with a partial date letter M for 1727, one has a maker's mark JJ possibly for James Jones and a date letter for 1769, and the final spoon has mostly worn marks but a date letter of d for 1779. This set is in great overall condition, particularly considering the age. One spoon has a monogram removal to the back of the handle, though it has the matching wolf crest on the front. Another spoon, the one dated 1779, has an old solder repair to the handle, but this is virtually unnoticeable without close, careful inspection (and knowing it is there in the first place). Each spoon is about 6 3/4 inches long.
The total weight for the set is 379 grams or 13.4 regular ounces. -jm
