12 c1840s English Staffordshire Davenport Green Floral 7 3/8 Bread Butter Plates
Regular price
$264.00
Presented is a fine set of 12 English Staffordshire porcelain bread and butter or dessert plates, likely by Davenport. These plates date to around the 1830s-1850s. The plates are white with sage green rims, decorated with gilt scrollwork, florettes, and bellflowers. Around the center are little hand painted sprays of colorful flowers, in delicate spring shades of pink, blue, yellow, purple and green, no two exactly alike.
This set is in great overall condition, especially considering the age and material. The plates have some wear to the gilding and to the floral sprays here and there, mainly around the center sides of the center well, which happens as a result of the plates being stored in a stack. One plate has a tiny chip to the rim, and two have a tiny chip to the underside of the rim (not visible from the top side). One of the plates with the underside rim chip and another with no chips both have some crazing and discoloration, and don't ring clearly when tapped, though there are no hairlines or cracks. We show the plate with the visible rim chip and the most discolored/crazed plate in the eighth photograph. The rest of the plates ring well when tapped, and all are entirely useable. All the plates are in useable condition.
Each plate measures about 7 3/8 inches in diameter. -jm
