Presented is a wonderful quality, heavy weight set of 11 Dutch silver dessert spoons or soup spoons made by J. M. Van Kempen & Son. These spoons are the large continental European size. They are done in an elegant threaded pattern which will work well with a variety of other patterns or sets. The backs of the handles are engraved with a star with wings on either side and the French motto ‘Il Faut’ beneath. The spoons are very well made and have great weight.
Each spoon is hallmarked on the reverse with the lion mark for Dutch 833 purity silver, the Minerva’s head duty mark, the maker’s mark for J. M. Van Kempen & Son, and a year mark. Four spoons have an ‘h’ year mark for 1867 and seven spoons have an ‘r’ year mark for 1876.
The condition is excellent. The spoons have some surface wear commensurate with age and light use and some small dings here and there, but this is fairly minor. There are no dents, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs.
The spoons are 7 1/4 inches long.
The weight is 495.3 grams or 17.4 ounces.
