Rare MMA 14k Gold Ancient Scythian Panther Lioness Hyena Pin Brooch Heavy Weight
Presented is a superb 14k gold pin or brooch, a replica of an ancient Scythian
design. The pin was made and sold by the Metroplitan Museum of Art,
commemorating exhibits of Scythian antiquities. The pin depicts a panther or
lioness, sometimes attributed as a hyena. This design is, I believe, a shield or
breastplate emblem. The pin is nicely detailed and well done, with fine detail
work for the smaller animals making up the tail. The eye of the animal is a
little cabochon of real emerald. The quality of this piece is exceptional, with
a nice feeling of weight and solidity. The pin is solid 14 karat gold, NOT gold
plate or vermeil. The plated versions of these are fairly common, but the solid
gold editions are much more rare today. We believe the pin dates to around the
securely. There are no breaks and no repairs.
The pin is stamped 14k, nitric acid tested and guaranteed. It is also stamped
MMA for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which made and sold high quality
replicas commemorating the antiquities exhibited by the museum.
The pin measures about 2 ½ by 1 ¼ inches.
The pin weighs 26.4 grams.
