Presented is an exceptional quality colonial American silver tankard or milk pitcher, dating to around the 1760s-1770s. This pre-Revolution piece was made by Massachusetts silversmith Thomas Grant (b. 1731-d.1804). The piece is made in a handsome classical form, with a rounded body, low round foot, and double scroll form handle. The front of the piece has a presentation reading “S Devereux to S D Barker” in elegant script while the handle has an older marriage style presentation done in cruder lettering, “S I * H.” The Devereux name is a prominent one in Marblehead going back to pre-Revolution times, and the newer presentation, according to the Marblehead Historical Society, is likely from S. Devereux (unidentified) to Sarah Devereux Barker, b. 19 Feb 1809 d. 14 Jan 1890, daughter of George Barker and Abigail Burrill Devereux. The older marriage presentation on the handle would be more contemporaneous to the making of the piece and the timeframe in which Thomas Grant was working as a silversmith, but unfortunately we were unable to identify what “S” initial family name is most likely to be tied to this inscription. Nevertheless this is a fantastic and rare piece of pre-Revolution, Colonial era American silver with ties to one of the oldest towns in one of the oldest states in the country.

This piece is in excellent condition. The spout is almost certainly a later addition to what was originally a tankard or mug, but even the addition is antique. There is an old solder repair where the handle meets the body (top joint) mostly visible on the interior, and maybe a smaller repair/reinforcement to the bottom join of the handle as well. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.

The underside of this piece is stamped with the maker's mark of Thomas Grant, a Colonial American era silversmith working in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

This piece stands about 5 3/4 inches tall and measures about 6 1/4 inches from handle to spout.

This piece weighs 365 grams or 12.9 regular ounces. -jm
