Ornate Set 4 1811-1819 English Georgian Sterling Silver Candlesticks
Regular price
$5,795.00
Presented is a superb quality set of 4 English Georgian sterling silver candlesticks. These candlesticks were all made by S. C. Younge & Co, a Sheffield maker, but two are dated 1811 while the other two are dated 1819. Nonetheless the candlesticks match perfectly in their very ornate design. The shafts are done in an elegant tapering form, with wider shoulder and knop adorned with shell and scroll decoration. The bases feature classical shell and scroll decoration very profusely and in high relief, while the socles have bold acanthus leaf designs around the sides. Two of the candlesticks have an engraved crest on the shaft, of a demi-lady holding a thistle in her right hand, between laurel wreaths. The other two have a crest of five ostrich plumes engraved on the base and on the socle. The candlesticks have removable wax drips/bobeches, for ease of cleaning and polishing. The bases are weighted for stability and felted so they will not mar surfaces. Really a beautiful set, and finding four in such a highly decorated style is not the easiest thing to do, so this is a rare opportunity.
Two of the candlesticks (the ones with the lady crest) are hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the crown for the city of Sheffield, the date letter C for 1811, the duty stamp of King George III's head, and the maker's mark for S. C. Younge & Co. The other two candlesticks are hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the crown for the city of Sheffield (upside down), the date letter V for 1819, the duty stamp of King George III's head, and the maker's mark for S. C. Younge & Co. The marks are all repeated on the bobeches/wax drips.
This set of candlesticks is in great overall condition. The candlesticks have very small spots of wear through the silver on the high points of the bases here and there, you can see the most noticeable one in the ninth photograph. One of the bobeches has a hole to a high point of its decoration, visible in the top of the tenth photograph. These two issues are the most noticeable. The candlesticks stand very straight with no crushing or compression, and the decoration is fairly crisp.
The candlesticks vary a little bit in height, ranging from about 8 5/8 to about 8 7/8 inches tall.
The total weight for the set is 2995 grams or 105.6 regular ounces. Due to the weighting, not all of this weight is sterling silver.
