Presented is an impressive antique Scottish sterling silver and smoky quartz pin or brooch, dating to circa 1840-1880. The brooch is made in a wonderful openwork design, with foliate scrollwork surrounding the stone all inside a nicely hand engraved frame. The stone is a massive oval cut smoky quartz measuring about 27.5 by 22 millimeters. The depth is harder to measure due to the 'high' profile of the brooch's design, but is at least 19 millimeters, giving a total carat weight of at least 63 carats. The pin has an old C style clasp, as well as a loop at the top on the back so it can be worn as a pendant.

This piece is in excellent condition. The stone is well set with no chips or noticeable scratches. Clasp is working well, though please note the pin shaft extends a good bit beyond the edge of the pin. There are no breaks or repairs to the silver.

This piece is not stamped or hallmarked, but we have tested it with nitric acid and guarantee it to be sterling silver. The pin came to us in a lot of Scottish sterling jewelry, some hallmarked, so we have no doubts it is of the same type.

The pin measures about 2 1/8 by 2 inches, and has a depth/height of about 1 inch.

This pin weighs 37.4 grams or 1.3 regular ounces.
