Presented is a wonderful pair of antique American coin silver eyeglasses or spectacles. These date to around the 1820s-1830s, though the case they came to us with is a little later, circa 1860, and not original, but it fits well enough. The glasses are a simple stylish design, with oval lenses, a deep curved/arched bridge, and prominent teardrop shaped loops at the ends of the arms, where a lanyard could easily be attached. But the most interesting feature is that the arms are extendable, and to quite a useable, wearable length even by today's standards.

These glasses are in excellent condition. The frames are working well, with no damages and no repairs. The glass is intact, but of course to wear them you would need to have a professional add your own lenses. Some wear to the case, as you'd expect.

The glasses are marked with a partial maker's mark or other mark, all we can really make out is A, and “10.” The silver is coin (900) purity silver, nitric acid tested and guaranteed.

The glasses measure about 4 5/8 inches from temple to temple. The arms are about 6 1/4 inches long when extended. The case is about 5 5/8 inches long.

The total weight for the pair of glasses (without the case) is 21.9 grams. Some of this weight is in the glass, but it is very light, so most of this weight is in the silver. -jm
