Regular price
$3,438.00
Presented is an antique, English sterling silver and cut glass cruet set made by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield in 1836. The rather large stand is completely sterling and has 8 rings to hold the various glass bottles. The ruffled rim of the base is beautifully cast with detailed shell decorations and pretty leaf designs. The handle is elaborately cast with acanthus leaf accents. The base is raised on four classical shell feet. The bottles we have included in this set are not all original to the base. They come in various cuts and shapes but are all antique. 4 of the bottles have their original sterling silver caps and 1 bottle has a silver plated cap.
The base is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, a duty mark of King William IV’s head, a crown for Sheffield next to the q date letter for 1836 and a maker’s mark for James Dixon & Sons. 4 out of 5 of the sterling caps are marked with the lion passant for sterling and date letters k and T for 1816 and 1832.
This set is in good overall condition. The sterling base is in fabulous overall condition, with no dents, no breaks, no splits and no repairs. The cut glass bottles have various degrees of wear and damages, as you can see in the photos below. The silver caps have some old dings.
The bottles range in height from 4 to 6 3/8 inches tall.
The silver base/stand measures 10 3/4 inches in diameter, is 10 1/4 inches tall and weighs 960 grams or 33.9 ounces. The total silver weight is slightly higher because of the bottle tops, but we have not included those in the weight.
