300 Year Old Antique Dutch Gold Washed 875 Silver Spoon King & Queen Finial

Presented is a Dutch, antique, gold-washed .875 silver rat tail spoon with an ornately cast handle made in Holland, now the Netherlands, in or before 1701. The finial features a tall, one inch and a half King and Queen standing upon a pedestal. All surfaces of the spoon, including the large and lovely, rounded bowl retain a light luminous gold wash.

The back of the bowl has two distinct lines of engraving. Closest to the bowl's rim, it appears to read, "1701 Den 24 Maart is Geboorin Duetie Ymis". The inner line of  what's called pin-prick engraving reads: "1762 den 10 Maart is Geboren Duetie Klauses Brouwer". Is this telling us that the grandson's birthday is two weeks away, in March, from the grandfather's?

There is one hallmark in addition to the inscriptions on the back of the bowl, and though indistinct, to the best of our knowledge, most closely resembles the 18th century City mark for Zutphen. Notice the four-lobed imprint below the letter "B" in "Brouwer".

The spoon is in very good condition and there are no damages or repairs. Please examine our well-focused photos to see for yourself.

Dimensions: 6 7/8 inches long. The bowl is 2 5/8 by 1 7/8 inches. The King and Queen finial is 1 1/2 inches, head to toe.

Weight: 55.1 grams
