Put some swash in your buckle! Presented is a beautifully made, sea-inspired, sash-style belt closure for a leather belt. This one-of-a-kind piece is made of sterling silver with a gold wash, otherwise known as vermeil or gilt silver, likely produced between 1900 through 1930's.  Artful seaweed forms gracefully envelope two, large, deep green, jade-like cabochons of Mtorolite* and attach by hook and loop to a six-inch chain, made of "seaweed" links, with each link uniquely designed. The end of the chain which dangles from the point of closure reveals a silver-toned barnacle peeking through the flowing seaweed fronds.  On the back side of the two large pieces are small, solid screws with threaded heads. The heads screw off and on for inserting your belt.

The artist's name, possibly "EvyS" is stamped into the back of the barnacle finial.

The condition of the piece is very good with tightly set rivets and seams. There is a tiny ding on the back of the loop part of the closure that we think happened during production, but otherwise there are no damages or repairs. The section of mottled gray stone particles visible on each of the cabochons is entirely natural and characteristic of Mtorolite, having adhered naturally to the quartz as it formed.

Length (with full extension as shown in the photograph): about 10 1/4 inches

Width of broadest piece: 1 7/8 inches

Width of chain links: about 1/2 inch

Weight:  170 grams

*Mtorolite, also called Chrome Chalcedony, is a naturally occurring variety of quartz which gets its rich green coloring from chromium. Chromium is the mineral that gives emeralds and Imperial jade their deep green color. Mtorolite is harder than jade and is commonly found in Zimbabwe.
