Presented is a great antique Russian silver niello enamel match safe or vesta case made by Gustav Klingert. The match safe is covered with black niello enamel in a checkerboard design. The case has what looks like "LG" engraved on the front in flowing script, though we are not certain this is what the monogram says as the lettering is a little rubbed. This case was made around the late 1800s.
The case is marked on the inside edge with 84 for 875 purity silver, a city mark for Moscow, and a maker’s mark of GK for Gustav Klingert. The inside of the lid is also stamped with the city mark and the 84.
The case is in good condition overall. It has some surface wear commensurate with age and light use, as well as some small dents and dings here and there. Most of these dents are on the very bottom where the match strike is. There is a little split in the lid on the front edge. Please view all the photos. There are no repairs.
The match safe measures 1/2 inch by 1 1/4 inches by 2 1/4 inches.
The weight is 42.8 grams or 1.5 ounces.
