Presented is a beautiful American sterling silver ladle from the 1860's to the early 1880's. This piece is stamped on the reverse with the word sterling. I believe the stamp was done after the ladle was made. Though this ladle is silver, it is either coin silver or sterling silver. There is a monogram on the front S.H. in Gothic script and a date on the reverse of 1902. This engraving was certainly done many years after this piece was made. This is not uncommon. The style and the design are definitely from the 1860's to the early 1880's.

This ladle has a matte finish throughout the entire piece. The bowl has a light gold wash. The interior of the bowl is beautifully pierced. The condition is absolutely perfect. There are no breaks, no splits, no cracks, no repairs, no monogram removals and no problems of any kind.

The length is 6 3/4 inches. Whiting Manufacturing Company, I believe, is the most likely maker. Although Gorham and several other of the better quality American makers of the time period could also be the manufacturer. Regardless, this is a beautiful quality piece with wonderful style in excellent condition.
